Chapter 291
Chapter 291
As Emily spoke, Lucas’s face drained of color. ‘No-‘ he thought.
“You’re lying.” Lucas shouted, as if yelling could make it any less true.
“Lydia saved me. You were traveling. Lydia even hurt her hand; she’s the one who saved me,” he denied desperately, his words coming out in a frantic mess.
Even as he kept denying it out loud, he couldn’t stop recalling what Charles had once told him.
The search and rescue team had spent days looking for him without any luck, but somehow, Lydia just happened to find him right away.
A girl who looked like she couldn’t hurt a fly had managed to carry a grown man like him, and aside from a scraped hand, she didn’t have a single scratch on her. This just didn’t make any sense..
Seeing the disbelief on his face, Emily gave a half-smile. “Who told you I was traveling? Did you ever check for yourself? And Lydia saving you-did you see it with your own eyes, or did you just hear it from someone else?
“Lucas, you’ve always been impulsive. If I’m being nice, I’d call it honest, but let’s be real-you’re just dumb.”
She continued, “If you actually had a brain, you’d go find out who Lydia really is. And if you really feel guilty about what happened to me, then do me a favor. Drag Lydia into the mud for me.”
Emily knew exactly how much Lydia cared about the Bennett Family’s attention. That was why, if the knife stabbing Lydia was held by her family, it would hurt her far more than anything Emily could do herself.
After saying her piece, Emily couldn’t be bothered to waste another word on him. She slammed the door right in his face.
The rental was tucked away behind the stairs in an old neighborhood, so not even the harsh midday sun could reach inside.
As the door slammed shut, Lucas was swallowed by darkness. The panic and fear in his chest crept up on him along with the night.
He didn’t want to doubt Lydia, but Emily said she was the one who saved him back then.
All kinds of chaotic emotions felt like they were ripping his head apart.
Lucas sat there in a daze on the old neighborhood’s flower bed, slumping from daylight into darkness, and then from darkness back into the morning, completely lost.
Some of the old folks out for their morning exercise saw how pale and downcast Lucas looked, and figured he must’ve gone through something rough.
They gathered around him, offering words of comfort and encouragement.
Maybe it was their comforting words, or maybe he just finally figured things out on his own, but Lucas suddenly got up rushed back to the Bennett residence. He didn’t even bother to clean himself up before heading straight to find Andrew.
and
Andrew’s study was packed with important company documents. Even Lydia, the Bennett Family’s favorite, wasn’t allowed to come and go as she pleased.
So when Lucas barged in without even knocking, Andrew’s face immediately turned grim.
“You’ve really been getting out of hand lately. First, you bullied Lydia right in front of all of us the other day, and now you

dare to storm into my study? Has it been too long since someone put you in your place?” Andrew snapped.
When Andrew brought up how Lucas had bullied Lydia a few days ago, he was momentarily dazed, and all at once, he remembered how the whole family had turned on him back then.
The anger and sense of injustice that had faded after Lydia apologized and backed down suddenly surged up again, and it was the first time Lucas ever felt any real resentment toward Lydia in his heart.
But that wasn’t why Lucas was here today. He asked, “Andrew, back when I had that accident in Lightning Valley, was it really Lydia who saved me?”
