Chapter 303

After leaving the Bennett Family, Lucas looked completely lost. By the time he snapped out of it, he found himself standing in the old neighborhood where Emily lived.

Whenever something was weighing on him, he’d always end up coming to Emily. He thought he’d outgrown this habit.

Suddenly, Lucas’s nose prickled with emotion. He picked up his pace, hurrying toward that damp, shadowy apartment

under the stairs.

Standing at the bottom of the stairs, Lucas took several deep breaths, rehearsing what he might say before finally mustering up the courage to knock on the door.

Thud, Thud, Thud. With each knock, Lucas felt his anxiety ratchet up another notch.

But the longer he knocked, the more that tension slowly ebbed away until it was completely gone.

Lucas knew Emily didn’t want to see him, but he’d finally realized his mistakes, and he was ready to make things right.

“Emily, please open the door. I-I just want to talk to you,” he said, his voice cracking. “I know I messed up. I was totally out of my mind, and I let Lydia fool me. I never meant to treat you that way.

“I really get it now. I was wrong. Emily, please, just give me a chance to make it up to you. Please.”

Lucas kept knocking on the door again and again, as if he wouldn’t give up unless Emily answered it herself.

He had no idea how long he’d been at it. The door never opened. Instead, the neighbor from diagonally across finally came

out.

“Hey, sir, you’ve been knocking forever. Didn’t you know the two young people who lived here already moved out?” the old man called out.

Lucas froze, panic suddenly surging in his chest. “Do you know where they moved to?”

He shook his head. “No idea, they didn’t say. But honestly, they’re both so young. It’s not right for them to stay in this rundown neighborhood forever. Austin’s pretty capable. They-”

The man kept rambling, but Lucas didn’t catch a single word. All Lucas knew was that Emily had abandoned him and walked away.

How could she just abandon me and leave? After everything it takes for me to finally realize my mistakes and try to make things right, how could she not give me even a single chance?’ he wondered.

Lucas was a mess, panic clawing at his chest as he staggered out of the old neighborhood. Barely keeping it together, he immediately sent people to look for any trace of Emily.

But Austin had moved out for one reason, and that was to keep the clingy Bennett Family from ever showing up again. He’d taken extra steps to cover their tracks, so there was no way Lucas could find them now.

While Lucas was running all over trying to find her, Emily went to the cemetery alone,

The cemetery was in a really remote spot, and she’d bought more than a dozen plots at once, making her easily their biggest

customer.

So whenever someone came by specifically to pay their respects, the staff would notify Emily right away. On her way there, Emily already had a pretty good idea who it might be.

Quiana and her grandmother had no family left in this world. Of the two graves that still had someone who might come to

pay their respects, it was either Xavier or Jeremy

But Jeremy definitely wouldn’t be kind enough to visit Zack’s grave, so it could only be Xavier

Sure enough, as soon as Emily got to the cemetery, she spotted Xavier from afar, crouched by Jackson’s grave.

Navier looked like a total mess, scruffy and unshaven, and it was obvious he hadn’t slept properly in days.

Getting thrown under the bus by Sofia probably meant Xavier was about to lose everything he’d gotten by killing his brother. No wonder he couldn’t get any rest.

But Emily didn’t feel the slightest bit of sympathy for him. She walked over, her face completely expressionless.
