Sean never told Lydia any of this himself. He was the prime suspect, and there were cops following him around all the time. Even Matthew couldn’t just walk in and see him.
Lydia had slipped in to see Sean unnoticed, using underhanded tricks; after all that effort, the visit was as good as no meeting-Sean had gone completely mad.
The doctors said Sean’s eyes had been slashed by a sharp object, leaving him completely blind.
So traumatized, Sean was terrified of anyone coming near him. Even when the police brought Matthew and Helen, Sean just lashed out at everyone-he nearly hurt Helen.
No matter what the police asked, all Sean did was stare blankly and keep repeating, “I’m sorry, I won’t do it again. Please, spare me. Please.”
When the police asked if he’d been threatened or forced, Sean just clutched his still-blood-soaked hands and cowered in terror, curling himself up into a ball.
In this state, there was no way to get anything out of him, but the evidence of his crimes was rock solid. Going insane wasn’t going to get him off the hook.
Besides, Sean had just been traumatized-whether he was truly insane or just faking it, that was for the hospital to determine.
Even though Lydia hadn’t gotten anything useful out of Sean, she knew better than anyone how this whole thing started. That didn’t stop her from shifting all the blame onto Emily without batting an eye.
Sure enough, as soon as Andrew heard Lydia’s so-called “truth,” he jumped to his feet, itching to go confront Emily and make her pay.
But Emily had already moved out of her old apartment, and Andrew couldn’t find her anywhere. With no other choice, he had to wait until the next day at work and have someone bring Emily to his office.
As soon as Emily walked in, before she could say a word, Andrew unleashed a barrage of questions. He snapped, “Did you se Sean up on purpose? You’ve gone too far, Emily.”
Emily had thought Andrew called her in for something important, and was still racking her brain over whether she’d done anything lately to make him suspicious. She never saw this coming at all.
Andrew fumed, “Do you even realize how much trouble this has caused the company? Emily, there’s got to be a limit to your reckless behavior. Why can’t you be more like Lydia-sensible and well-behaved?”
Emily’s expression turned icy. There was no anger in her eyes at Andrew’s sudden accusation-just a mocking, sarcastic glint.
She already knew Sean had gone blind. After all, as the victim, the police needed her statement and would keep her identity
secret.
Austin had covered all the bases. Even as the CEO of Bennett Group, there was no way Andrew could get wind of this so easily.
Emily figured it must have been Lydia who spilled it to Andrew. She asked bluntly, “Did Lydia tell you about Sean?”
Before Andrew could even process her question, he snapped back on instinct, “Lydia was just looking out for you. Why are you taking that tone? Are you blaming her now?”

His reaction was as good as admitting Emily was right.
Emily scoffed, “How could I possibly blame Lydia? I’m just curious-Mr. Bennett, you always think you’re so clever. Haven’t you noticed that something doesn’t add up here?”
Her words caught Andrew completely off guard, and for a moment, all his anger just got stuck in his throat. He stood there, looking stunned. He asked, “What do you mean?”
Emily shot back, “Sean’s under strict police watch at the hospital-even his parents need an escort just to see him. So how exactly did Lydia manage to get in?
“And even if she did get in, how come the police couldn’t get a word out of him, but she could? And if she did get Sean to accuse me, then why didn’t the police come for me?
“Instead, why did Lydia run straight to you with the story?”
