They were just here to earn a paycheck, not to get tangled up in their employer’s messy family affairs.
They all just stood there, watching as Lucas sat there in a daze in the dim storage room for hours, not moving an inch. It wasn’t until the blood on his hand had dried and crusted over that he snapped out of it.
After all that, Lucas’s hand was completely crippled. Gale had spent the whole day grinding away at the company, and by the time he dragged his exhausted body home and heard the news, he just stood there, completely shell-shocked.
For a second, he just felt totally at a loss. He thought, ‘What did we ever do to deserve all this? Why are we being put through so much misery?”
He knew it was wrong to have doubted Emily back then, but they’d been manipulated. And they realized how badly they’d messed up.
It was just a moment of weakness, Gale thought. ‘Why can’t we get a chance to make things right? Why can’t we be allowed to fix what we broke?’
Unable to make sense of it all, Gale decided he had to go see Emily himself and ask her about it.
Maybe they just needed to sit down and talk things out. Maybe if they could clear the air, everything could finally move forward.
But when Emily found out why he was coming, she refused to even see him. She was truly fed up with the Bennett family showing up at her door over and over again.
To get rid of all this trouble once and for all, she simply decided to finish her plans for the Bennett Group ahead of Schedule.
From the outside, it looked like she only had one project in hand. But what no one realized was that almost every project the company had signed recently had actually been set up by Austin himself.
And with the shares she’d gotten from Andrew before, Emily could trigger chaos in the Bennett Group at any time if she wanted.
Even though everything was ready, making it happen was still a real challenge. But with Austin backing her up, everything progressed incredibly smoothly.
In just a few months, Emily had taken control of the entire Bennett Group. Even Gale had been ousted from his position as chairman.
It wasn’t until then that Emily finally agreed to see Gale. Gale had been wracked with guilt toward Emily before, but the moment he saw her, all that guilt turned to rage. He stormed up to her and tried to slap her across the face.
“You damn brat, you-” he started, voice shaking with anger. But his hand never landed. The bodyguards stepped in and stopped him.
With those burly bodyguards standing in his way, Gale didn’t dare make a move. Still, he glared at Emily, his eyes full of menace. “Emily, I’m your father! Do you have any idea how unfilial you’re being right now?”
Emily gave a slight, mocking smile, her face icy. “You’re not my father. You said no one as vicious as me could ever be your daughter.”
Gale choked, left at a loss for words. He did say that, but he retorted, “I was tricked! I didn’t mean any of it from the bottom of my heart. Haven’t we been trying to make it up to you?
“Parents are always right, aren’t they? People make mistakes. It’s just human nature. It’s still not too late. Can’t you just give us a chance to fix things?
“Emily, if you’re still angry, I apologize to you. I’m sorry. From now on, we’ll make it up to you, double. Will you come home
with me?
He looked just like a father trying to reason with a disobedient daughter. But Emily just felt sickened by his phony kindness
and fake tolerance.
She thought. If Lydia hadn’t been exposed and lost all her value to them, if Grandpa Charles hadn’t left me that 20% stake, would the Bennett family even care if I was really one of them?
‘No, they wouldn’t. All they care about is their own interests and whatever they think is right or wrong. Because the Bennett family is selfish and hypocritical to the core.
