Chapter 436

“Warning! The host has died. The mission in the “The Beloved Heiress’ world has failed. Warning!”

The sharp pain at the back of her head and the terror of impending death trapped Lydia like a suffocating net, leaving her

no way out.

It wasn’t until the system’s cold, piercing voice rang in her ear that she sucked in a deep breath, jolting herself back to

awareness.

She gasped for air, as if her thunderous heartbeat was echoing in her ears. After a while, she thought about checking herself

over.

She still had all her limbs, her body was fine, and even the pain at the back of her head had disappeared. Lydia’s heart leapt with joy. I’m not dead?’ she thought.

As if it had heard her thoughts, the system’s voice rang out again. “In the real world, you died in a car accident after being chased and beaten in public by the wife, all because you were the other woman.

“That’s why you were chosen to enter the novel world and snatch the heroine’s fortune. But the body you were inhabiting in the novel world has died, so whether it’s the real world or the novel world, you’re already dead.”

Lydia jumped at the sudden voice, but quickly realized it was her ever-present system. She immediately asked, “What’s happening to me now?”

The system answered, “You were just a soul inhabiting an NPC’s body in the novel world. Once that body died, your soul naturally left the novel world.”

Lydia felt a surge of resentment. “Well, get me a new body. I want to restart the mission. This time, I want a body whose status is at least as high as Emily’s. That way, they won’t dare lay a finger on me.”

She subconsciously believed it was because the body she’d possessed had such a low status that the Bennett family and Vincent had acted against her without a second thought.

But the system replied, “You only get one chance. You’ve failed the mission, and now you must accept your punishment.”

A wave of panic washed over Lydia. “Wh-what punishment?”

The system’s voice was cold. “Your mission was to enter the novel world, replace the Child of Fortune, snatch the heroine’s luck, and then hand over half of that luck to the system once you succeeded.

“But since you failed the mission, and even used the system’s power on credit while you were at it, you now have to make up for the system’s losses and pay back half of the luck you owe, in another way.”

Even though Lydia had no idea what the system meant in “another way,” a sinking feeling crept over her. “What do you mean by ‘make up for it?” she stammered.

The system responded, “A human soul is a mysterious and powerful force. By dismantling and devouring a human soul, the system can grow stronger.”

Lydia instantly realized what it meant, and she shrieked, “No way! I don’t agree. You never told me about any of this before the mission started. How can you just devour my soul like this?”

The system kept up its cold, mechanical tone. “We never steal human souls. Before the mission begins, we sign a contract with the chosen host. Everything is clearly spelled out in the agreement.”

A contract appeared out of nowhere and slowly drifted over to Lydia. In the section that was highlighted, it clearly stated in bold letters-“If the mission fails, the host voluntarily offers up their soul.”

Lydia turned pale. Her life had been nothing but hardship; growing up poor in the countryside, she was always hungry and cold. Only her good looks let her hook up with a rich old man.

She was about to become his official woman. When out of nowhere, the wife stormed in and demanded she cough up every cent the old man had ever spent on her.

While running for her life, Lydia got into a car accident and died, full of unwillingness and regret. When she opened her eyes again, she found herself in this endless white void.
