Chapter 189
Alexander’s POV
“Give the phone to my sister! I want to talk to her!!” Thea’s dissatisfied voice came through the speaker.
“Thea Blackwood, what did you just promise your uncle?” I lowered my voice several degrees, using my Alpha tone. “You said you only needed to confirm your sister was safe, which is why I let her take the call. Don’t push your boundaries.”
I had no desire for Thea to have excessive contact with a strange woman. Sarah Winters was someone I’d barely just met, and knew nothing about. There was no way I could trust her with my niece.
Thea’s health had been fragile since childhood. When it came to matters concerning her, I was always exceptionally cautious.
“Uncle…” Thea’s voice softened, rare for her to use such a sweet, pleading tone with me. “I’m sorry, I shouldn’t
have spoken to you like that…”
“Please let me talk to sister for just a little longer?”
“Two minutes, just two minutes, please, Uncle?”
“I promise afterward I’ll hang up, take my medicine, and stay home like a good girl…”
“Uncle, Thea loves you, loves you more than anyone…”
“Not even one minute.” My stance remained firm as I ended the call.
At the same moment, I shot Sarah a cold glare. She visibly flinched.
“Why are you looking at me like that? I don’t think I’ve done anything wrong,” she said, taking a step back.
“Oh, I just remembered I haven’t freshened up yet. I’ll use the bathroom. Alpha Blackwood, please go about
your business and don’t mind me.”
It was obvious my mood had soured. To avoid becoming collateral damage, Sarah quickly made herself scarce.
But when she reached the bathroom door, she unexpectedly turned back. “Alexander!!”
I raised my head almost hastily, my gaze falling on the source of the sound.

In my thirty–plus years, this was the first time I’d heard someone say my name so naturally–like she’d said it a thousand times before, the syllables fitting perfectly on her tongue.
So natural, in fact, that it took me a moment to realize…she wasn’t supposed to call me by name at all.
She should’ve said “Alpha.”
She was hanging onto the doorframe, smiling at me. “Can I make a suggestion?”
Reflexively, I responded, “Speak…”
“It’s just that, you shouldn’t be so harsh with Thea. Children’s emotions are sensitive and fragile. They get hurt
easily. You should be gentler.”
“And I can tell you love Thea very much. If you love her, you should let her know it. Don’t keep it bottled up
inside while wearing that stern expression all the time.
Otherwise, your relationship will suffer. Be careful she doesn’t learn from you and become just as fierce toward
you someday.”
Her little mouth moved animatedly as she spoke. When she smiled, her eyes curved like crescent moons,
seeming to contain starlight that silently, imperceptibly fell into my heart.
My heart pounded wildly for two beats. This momentary loss of control felt terrible and repulsive to me. My
brow furrowed deeply. “This is a family matter. I don’t need Ms. Winters to interfere.”
“While we’re offering advice, I should suggest that you not be so presumptuous.”
In other words, she was meddling in my business. Sarah clearly got the message.
She blinked. “But I really like Thea, and I like you too, Alpha Blackwood. That’s the only reason I spoke up.‘
“Hmph!” A cold laugh rolled from my throat, the kind when hearing something ridiculous.
From beginning to end, we’d known each other for less than twenty–four hours, and she was telling me she
liked me?
What did she like about me? My cold detachment? Or how I’d left her to die in that cabin?
“You don’t believe me, do you?” She was still smiling, seemingly unbothered by my dismissal.
“I know you don’t believe me. Actually, if I were in your position, I wouldn’t believe it either. But Alpha Alexander…”
