Sarah’s POV
I hoping for even a small reaction.
But he just kept flipping through the book, barely acknowledging I was there.
He used to be distant, yes, but this… this was something else. Sharper. Harder. Like he’d built walls around himself and locked everyone out.
What happened to you, Alexander? Is it because of your fiancée?
I hated it. I hated not knowing him anymore.
So I said, as casually as I could, “She must be quite something.”
He didn’t look up.
I kept going, my voice light, teasing–at least I tried to make it sound that way. “Your fiancée, I mean. What’s she like?”
That finally got a reaction. He paused, then slowly looked up at me, his eyes colder than ice.
“Why do you ask?”
I shrugged, pretending not to care. “Just curious.Not everyone ends up engaged to a socialite. That’s… impressive.”
He said nothing.
I let out a soft, awkward laugh, filling the silence. “She must be beautiful. And patient. You don’t seem like the easiest person to live with.”
That earned me a brief look–sharp and unreadable.
Then he stood up, voice flat. “This conversation is unnecessary.”
“Right,” I said quickly, my smile faltering. “Sorry. I didn’t mean to pry.”
I watched him walk toward the door, something tightening in my chest. “Alexander… where are you going?”
He barely glanced back at me, his voice cool and detached. “To sleep.”
“Wait,” I protested, surprised by how desperate I sounded. “What am I supposed to do if you go to sleep?”
He turned around fully now, his intense gaze sweeping over me with careful assessment.
There was something primal in the way his eyes moved over my form, checking for threats or weaknesses.
My wolf would have sensed his dominance immediately – if she were still with me.
“I still need to wash up,” I explained, holding up my bandaged hands. “The doctor said I can’t get the wounds

I blinked at him hopefully, trying to look as pitiful as possible. “Hmm?”
Without a word, Alexander pulled out his phone and dialed a number, his expression remaining completely emotionless. “Send a female attendant to care for Miss Winters,” he ordered.
Then, with one hand casually tucked into his pocket, he walked out of the room, pulling the door closed behind him with a quiet click.
I stared at the ceiling, speechless. “…”
Just minutes ago, he had held me in his arms, shown genuine concern.
How quickly his mood had shifted. Everyone talked about how women were impossible to read, but men especially Alpha werewolves like Alexander – were the true enigmas.
With a heavy sigh, I collapsed onto the bed, staring up at the ceiling as I replayed the events from the masquerade ball. Who was behind it all?
Was Queenie determined to eliminate me, or had someone else targeted me the moment I returned to the country?
The assailant had clearly been after me specifically, with lethal intent. If that girl I’d helped earlier hadn’t appeared when she did, I might not have survived the night.
Then a memory flickered–days ago, someone had called me by a name I hadn’t heard in years.

That she–wolf was Queenie’s closest friend.Suzanna.
Alpha Foster’s mistress had the same name.
Could it really be just a coincidence?
But Suzanna was supposed to be dead.And even if she had somehow survived… that girl looked nothing like her.
Different scent. Different eyes. Different voice.
And yet I couldn’t shake the feeling.

A knock at the door interrupted my thoughts.
“Miss Winters, may I come in?” called a female attendant from the hallway.
I pulled myself from my thoughts and sat up. “Come in.”
After washing up and settling back into bed, exhaustion finally overtook me. For once, my mind went blissfully blank as I drifted into a dreamless sleep.

Morning sunlight streamed through the curved floor–to–ceiling windows, hitting my eyelids with irritating brightness.
1 reluctantly opened my eyes, squinting as I glanced around the room.
The bedroom was empty- no sign of Alexander. At least I hadn’t sleepwalked again during the night.
I yawned and stretched, then got out of bed and wandered into the main cabin. Just as I emerged, I caught sight of Alexander, impeccably dressed and clearly on his way out.
