“No, no!” I quickly leaned against her shoulder, playfully nuzzling close like wolves do to show affection. “I was wrong. I’m just worried about you, that’s all.”
“Darling, am I not allowed to worry about you anymore?” I softened my voice, letting affection flow through my words.
“Listen to me. You and I–we’re going to be best friends for life. Nothing will ever separate us, understand?”
Elena nodded in agreement, a small smile finally breaking through her serious expression.
After a moment, she stood up. “Let me change your bandage.”
She disappeared into the livingroom and returned moments later with a first aid kit. “I used this when Alpha David was injured. It works wonderfully.”
Elena’s fingers were incredibly gentle as she unwrapped my bandage, her brow furrowed with concern. “Does it still hurt?”
I’d endured pain a thousand times worse than this in my life. This barely registered. “I barely feel it. Like an ant bite, really.”
The words had barely left my mouth when I regretted them. Elena’s eyes suddenly sharpened with curiosity, studying me intently.
“Okay, it hurts a little,” I admitted quickly, then changed the subject before she could probe further. “Elena, there’s something I’ve been curious about.”
“What is it?” she asked, carefully winding fresh gauze around my hand.
“Did Alpha David’s father accept you from the beginning?”
Elena continued bandaging my hand as she answered. “Yes. Not long after David and I started dating, he took me home to meet his parents.”
“At the time, Alpha David’s mother was adamantly opposed to our relationship. Queenie couldn’t stand me either. His father just sat in his chair, watching me silently with an extremely serious expression.”
“What happened then?” I prompted, genuinely curious.
Elena’s face took on a distant look, clearly still affected by the memory.
“Even now, I remember it vividly. David’s mother, Danielle, pointed at me and started screaming, ‘You shameless vixen!“”
“My son is already promised to someone else! Who do you think you are, seducing him? Let me tell you, someone of your caliber will never set foot in the Mercer household!‘“‘
She smiled slightly as she continued.
“David held my hand tightly, confronting his mother. ‘Mom, I want you to understand something. I brought

“And regarding that engagement you mentioned–I never agreed to it. If you want to proceed with it, you can do it yourself. It has nothing to do with me.“”
“You should have seen Luna Danielle’s face,” Elena said with satisfaction. “She looked like she’d swallowed something rotten.”
I couldn’t help but smile, feeling a surge of happiness for my friend. “I’m glad Alpha David stood up for you. It shows he’s a mate worth having.”
“And what was his father’s reaction?” I asked curiously.
Elena’s voice grew quieter.
“Alpha Richard Mercer was sitting in the living room when I walked in. He looked straight at me and said, ‘Miss Elena, as David’s father, I have the right to know your intentions.“”
“His voice was calm, but the pressure behind it was unmistakable.”
“I told him, ‘My feelings for David are real. I want to take care of him and walk through life with him. I hope you can give us your blessing.“”
“‘‘And if I don’t?‘ he asked.”
“I said, ‘Then I’ll stay by his side anyway–even without the pack’s approval. I won’t give up on him.‘”
I raised an eyebrow. “And that worked?”
“Yes,“Elena gave a faint smile. “But Queenie and Luna Danielle. They were furious. Queenie crossed the line, and Alpha Richard actually slapped her. She stormed out after that.”
Elena sighed as she finished securing my bandage. “I knew then that the enmity between me and Luna Danielle and Queenie ran deep. We would never get along in this lifetime.”
I let out a long breath after hearing her story. “At least you have a decent father–in–law and a fiancé who, despite his temper, truly cares for you.”
“Otherwise, your life could have been much more difficult. With them around, I can worry a little less about you.”
But could I really stop worrying?
Alpha Richard was a patriarch of a powerful family who had navigated the werewolf business world for decades. He’d seen all types of people and threats to his bloodline.
Such men always calculated pros and cons carefully, especially when it came to their heir’s mate selection. How could a few words from Elena have won him over so easily?
The werewolf elite rarely welcomed outsiders without resistance- the purity of bloodlines and strength of potential offspring were too important in our world.
It wasn’t that Elena wasn’t good enough–in my eyes, she was the best, certainly worthy of David. But would

Alpha Richard see it the same way?
Alphas rarely approved mates based on love alone.
Yet Alpha Richard had approved of the marriage and was protecting Elena.
Was it because he genuinely lacked prejudice about social standing, or was there some other factor that outweighed such considerations?
