Shocking news swept Crownpoint that day. A gruesome murder had claimed the life of Evelyn Cirrus, the heiress of Cirrus Inc. Her severed head had been discovered near the riverbank by a fisherman, but the rest of her body had yet to be recovered.
When her family heard the news, they broke down in tears. Evelyn was their only daughter, doted on not only by her parents but also by her five brothers.
“Are they reporting about me? I’m… dead?!” Evelyn watched as her parents and brothers wept bitterly. Reporters crowded around, snapping pictures of the scene.
“Mom, Dad, guys, it’s me–Evelyn!” She tried to rush forward, only to realize her body drifted like smoke. Looking down at herself, she froze, unable to process the fact that she had turned into a ghost.
She remembered having a fancy dinner with her family the night before. But beyond entering a car, it was all a blank.
The Cirruses wailed in despair, begging the police to find the killer quickly. They refused interviews and, under the protection of their bodyguards, returned home. Evelyn followed them, still unable to understand why she had died.
When they arrived back home, her parents and brothers suddenly dropped their act. The grief vanished from their faces.
Marshall Cirrus, her father, barked at his eldest son. “Henry, what the hell were you thinking? Dumping her head in a place like that? It was discovered almost immediately! Didn’t I tell you to clean everything up properly?”
“Dad, I thought if I threw it in the river, it would wash away. How could I know some stinking fisherman would reel it in? Forget that–what do I do with the rest of the remains in my car?” Henry’s voice shook with panic. He had hidden the missing pieces of the corpse inside his vehicle.
Avril Leclair, her mother, snapped, “Why didn’t you dump them all at once? Why keep anything?”
“I planned to scatter them bit by bit so no one would ever notice. How could I’ve guessed this would happen?! If the police find what’s in my car, I’m finished!”
Marshall frowned in thought. “Leave it for now. We’re already under close watch—we can’t risk any moves. As the victim’s relatives, no one would suspect us anyway. Once things cool down, we’ll deal with it.”
Evelyn was floored. They’re my murderer?! Why would they do this to me?

She remembered sitting in the car after dinner, suddenly feeling drowsy, and then slipping into sleep. That was it. And when she woke again, she was already dead–her body dismembered and discarded.
“Why would you do this to me?” she screamed. These were the people closest to her, the ones she had trusted most. But her voice carried no weight. She was nothing but a ghost now.
Caleb Cirrus, her second brother, suddenly shivered. “Why do I feel a cold draft? Could that be Evelyn’s ghost returning?”
Marshall shot him a glare. “Nonsense! It’s broad daylight.” Yet he sighed right after. “Evelyn was a good kid. Obedient, respectful. But she was never truly ours. Now that she’s gone, it’s the perfect time to bring our real daughter home.”
The words struck Evelyn like lightning. I wasn’t their biological child?
Eavesdropping, she pieced together the truth. A month earlier, the Cirruses had discovered she had been switched at birth. She was never their real daughter. The true heiress had been raised in another household.
Afraid Evelyn would one day return to her birth family and take the Cirrus fortune with her, they decided to eliminate her. They had drugged her drink at dinner, and once she passed out in the car, they dismembered her body and disposed of it.
“Finally, our real sister can come home.” Henry’s eyes glinted with relief.
Caleb added coldly, “That imposter should’ve died long ago, after living off us all these years.”
“No wonder I never liked her,” Julian, her third brother, grumbled. “Turns out she was never truly one of us.”
Quentin, her fourth brother, clenched his fists. “Just thinking of our real sister suffering out there all this time makes me sick.”
And Silas, the youngest of her older brothers, said firmly, “When she comes back, we’ll treat her twice as well. She’s the real one.”
Those words were like poisoned blades, slicing her heart open bit by bit. The people she had once called family turned out to be so vicious. Their hands were stained with her blood, and all of them wished for her death–just so their birth daughter could come home.
Cruel didn’t even begin to cover it.
Evelyn roared in fury and lunged at her brothers, desperate to tear them apart. But each time, she caught nothing but air. She was only a shapeless wraith, powerless to touch them.

Ahhhhhh! Evelyn let out a bloodcurdling scream. Suddenly, a beam of white light poured in from the window and wrapped around her. It was so blinding she couldn’t open her eyes. When she became aware again, she found herself lying in her bedroom.
“Evie, get up already—we’re going out to eat today!” her mother, Avril, called out cheerfully.
Evelyn jolted in shock. She looked at Avril standing before her and gave her own leg a quick pinch under the blanket. Ow! I can feel it. I’m alive… What on earth is happening?
“Evie, what’s wrong? Didn’t you promise to eat out with us today?”
Then, it hit her. I’ve gone back to the day before they killed me!
That day, too, it was Avril who entered her room, telling her they we were eating out. They had dinner, she got in the car… and that was when they drugged her and chopped her to pieces.
I’ve come back to life!
The memory of her parents‘ and brothers‘ cruel faces burned in her mind, and Evelyn swore she would not let the same fate repeat itself.
“Mom, I’m not feeling well. I don’t want to go out anymore. Can we just eat at home instead?”
“What? But you promised me,” Avril said in surprise. Everything had already been arranged; they only needed Evelyn to take the bait.
“Mom, I really don’t feel good. It’s just one meal, right? We can eat at home too. You love me so much, you wouldn’t want me to suffer, would you?”
“Shall I get you a doctor?”
“No need. I’ll be fine if I just rest a while.”
Avril hesitated, but in the end she left the room.
Evelyn let out a quiet breath of relief, but under the covers, she clenched her fists tight. This time, she would make the Cirruses pay for what they had done.
Outside, Avril said to Marshall, “She says she’s not feeling well. She won’t go.”
“She won’t go? We had everything planned! How can she suddenly refuse?” Marshall’s face darkened.

Marshall scowled and let out a weary sigh. “D*mn it. Our birth daughter is still suffering out
there.”
“Mom, Dad, what did you just say? Birth daughter? Are you telling me I’m not your biological child?” Evelyn suddenly appeared in the doorway.
Marshall and Avril froze, momentarily at a loss for words.
“Say something! Am I your daughter or not?” Evelyn pressed.
At last, Avril admitted the truth. “Evie, you really aren’t ours. At the hospital back then, the babies were switched by mistake. We always planned to exchange you back, but we wanted to wait until later, afraid it would hurt you. Maybe it’s better that you know now.”
Evelyn lowered her gaze, feigning heartbreak and sorrow. In truth, all she wanted was to throw their plan into disarray and stop them from carrying out her murder. From now on, she would make them pay dearly.
