Chapter 13 Facing the Manager
Even a mere caretaker had dared to treat him like that.

Because of Stellan’s bad temper, the caretaker had grown lazy and stopped paying him any attention. Instead, she laced his food and water with sedatives, keeping him half–asleep most of the time. That way, he wouldn’t bother her, and she could go about her own business.
“That caretaker was truly vicious. Too many of those pills could severely damage your kidneys. If you kept taking them, kidney failure would eventually kill you!”
“Can… can it be cured?” Stellan asked anxiously.
Evelyn gave him a sidelong glance. “Funny how you’re not worried about whether you’ll walk again, but you’re so concerned about your kidneys.”
He said nothing. In truth, he just didn’t want to become a useless man. Even if he recovered physically, what would it mean if his kidneys gave out?
“Don’t worry. Luckily, you only took them for a year. Once your body stabilizes, I’ll prescribe you some medicine. You’ll be fine,” Evelyn reassured him.
“Thank you. No wonder I often felt chest pains before. Turns out someone was tampering with me,” Stellan sighed.
“Chest pains?” Evelyn frowned and picked up the blood test report again.
“What is it?” Stellan asked nervously when he saw her expression.
“I’d better test your blood myself. I have a feeling something else is going on.”
She pricked his fingertip with a needle and collected a single drop. That was all she needed.
“Alright, I need to take care of something this afternoon,” Evelyn told him afterward. “Stay here in the hospital. They’ll look after you. When things calm down, I’ll bring you home.”
“Sure. Go handle your business, don’t worry about me.”
Evelyn noticed how different he seemed–gentler, calmer, no longer the irritable man he once
was.
That afternoon, Victor and Charlotte returned home. Once they heard about Cosmo’s arrest, they insisted on going with Evelyn.

“Evie, I heard from Chuck that the other side has backing, someone powerful–Mr. Wyndham. We can’t let you go alone,” Charlotte said.
“Yeah, Evie,” Victor added. “I can’t rest easy if you and Lottie go by yourselves. If something happens, at least I’ll be there.”
“I can handle this on my own. You two can stay here,” Evelyn replied, not seeing the need.
But Penny was worried. “We’re family, Evie. We should face things together. Vic and Lottie should go with you. That way, you can all look out for one another.”
Evelyn looked at them and finally nodded. “Alright then. Let’s go together.”
Soon, they arrived at HighPoint Construction. At the gate, once the guards learned they were Cosmo’s family, they were allowed inside.
“Come with me. Mr. Wyndham is waiting for you,” the man leading them said.
Victor and Charlotte both grew tense.
Inside the conference room, two rows of black–suited bodyguards flanked the walls. The display was clearly staged to intimidate.
Charlotte shrank closer to Victor, her fear written all over her face–she had never seen so many bodyguards before. Victor swallowed hard and forced himself to stay composed. He was nervous too, but as the only man, he couldn’t show weakness.
Through it all, Evelyn remained calm, her face expressionless.
“So, you’re Cosmo’s family?” asked the man seated at the head of the room. He looked barely thirty, dressed in a suit and tie, his slicked–back hair gleaming with oil as he sat cross–legged in his chair.
This was the man backing Callum–Harold Wyndham.
“Yes, we are,” Victor answered, stepping forward. “We’re his siblings.”
Harold threw back his head and laughed.
Ridiculous! A bunch of siblings coming to plead their brother’s case–too easy to crush. They’re already trembling at the show of force alone.
“Well then, which one of you is in charge?”
Victor started to step forward, but Evelyn stopped him. “I am.” Her gaze locked on Harold, cold and unflinching.

He met her eyes and was startled to see a flash of lethal sharpness in them. Not a trace of fear.
Interesting. So, this little girl has guts. Still, she’s just a kid. All bravado. Anyone else will already be quaking in their boots.
“Fine. Since you’re in charge, let’s talk about your brother. He stole my company’s materials and sold them outside. That’s theft. And on top of that, he assaulted my men. Multiple offenses, all punishable.” Harold leaned back, watching her closely.
“My brother was framed. He’s simple–minded and would never do such a thing. This is nothing but a setup!” Charlotte burst out angrily.
Victor chimed in, “We want to see the surveillance footage. The cameras will prove the truth.”
“Sorry,” Harold sneered, “the cameras are broken. Nothing to see. But as for theft and assault, there are plenty of witnesses. Especially the fight–everyone saw it.”
