Jade stood by watching with a gloating smile. “I knew it! We’re in for a good show. A girl with no manners like her ought to be beaten to death!”
Penny panicked as the men in black closed in on them. “Evie, w–what do we do? If they catch us, even if we live through it, your grandmother will skin us alive.”
“Is that so? Well, today, I want to see who’s the one paying the price!” Evelyn tightened her grip on Penny’s hand and started to pull her away.
“Catch them! Hurry!” Jade shouted, and the black–clad bodyguards surged forward.
Evelyn fought back one after another, taking them down with ease. She never even let go of Penny’s hand, fending them off with the other.
When the last one rushed at her, she kicked him squarely in the chest, sending him flying. He landed right at Barbara’s feet, drawing startled gasps and shrieks from the onlookers.
Only when the men in black lay sprawled on the ground did Evelyn stop. She turned back and swept her gaze across the crowd. The force of it made everyone’s nerves tighten.
“Anyone who dares lay a hand on my parents, I don’t care who they are–I’ll make them pay. Since you’ve already cast our family out, there’s no need for ties anymore. From this day on, we won’t step into this house again!”
With that, Evelyn led Penny away.
“Evie, you’ve really gone and enraged them now…” Penny whispered anxiously as they hurried along.
“Mom, don’t be afraid. From now on, we’ll hold our heads high. We don’t owe them anything, so stop bowing and scraping. And those vegetables you’ve worked so hard to grow–better to feed them to pigs than give them to people like that.”
Penny nodded, her chest tightening. It was the first time she had ever stood this firm inside the Gulliver Mansion–and it was all because of her daughter.
She suddenly thought Evelyn truly was her treasure, Penny herself had always been timid, and her husband gentle to a fault; no one in their little family had ever stood up straight. If not for the DNA test, she would have doubted such a fierce, unyielding girl could be her own child.
Back inside the Gulliver Mansion, chaos still reigned. The bodyguards groaned on the floor, the dining table was overturned, and dishes and sets of cutleries scattered everywhere.

“This is outrageous! I’ve married into the Gulliver family for years, and I’ve never seen anyone so defiant!” Jade fumed.
“Exactly! Savage and uneducated. To think she came from the Cirrus family. Compared to our Ginny, she’s nothing!”
But Regina stayed silent, lost in thought. While everyone was condemning Evelyn, she felt a flicker of envy. Evelyn could act exactly as she pleased, and no one had ever dared behave that way in front of Barbara.
“Enough! All of you, shut your mouths! Get someone to clean this mess!” Barbara snapped.
Thomas stepped forward to support her. “Mom, Wyatt’s daughter is so unruly. Aren’t you going to rein her in?”
A strange glint flickered in Barbara’s eyes. “Hmph. To think Wyatt’s family could produce such a character. At least she’s got a backbone.”
Thomas frowned in confusion. That tone… it almost sounds like admiration…
“But no matter what, she’s still of Gulliver blood. She can’t overturn the heavens. I’ll call Wyatt and make sure they come and beg for forgiveness.” Barbara’s voice turned cold again.
That Evelyn girl has fire. Out of all the children and grandchildren, not one has shown such presence. Her nature is a bit like mine when I was young, ruling with an iron hand.
But she’s too rash. And daring to contradict me—I won’t stomach that. No matter how capable she is, I’ll never keep someone who defies her elders. In the Gulliver family, only I rule. No one else will ever climb above me!

After dropping Penny at home, Evelyn received a call from Lucian.
“Boss, just like you guessed, Harold Wyndham has indeed been in contact with Auster Sharpe. Especially recently–it’s been frequent. Harold’s tied to HighPoint Construction through Theodore Lytton, his brother–in–law–the younger brother of Theodore’s mistress, technically.
“Thanks to Theodore, he holds a small–time GM position at the construction site. Knows nothing about the business, just throws his weight around. Boss, did Harold offend you? What do you want done?”
Evelyn thought for a moment. “Does Theodore’s wife know about this? I think she should be informed,”
“Got it, Boss. Leave it to me!”

“And about Cirrus Inc.–throw out the bait. Over the years, they’ve swallowed plenty. Time for them to cough some up.”
“On it!” Lucian said eagerly.
Hmph. Anyone who dares cross the boss is signing their own death warrant.
Before dark, Evelyn made her way to the hospital.
When Stellan saw her walk in, his heart settled instantly. The gloom in his eyes lifted, replaced with light. Without her there, he had felt an aching emptiness.
“The nurse said you haven’t taken your medicine yet. Here, take it now.” Evelyn brought the pills and a glass of water to his side, holding them out to him.
