Chapter 27 A Sister’s Promise
He clung to it like a guilty child.
Simon and the others, including Mad Dog, stood frozen in shock.

Am I seeing this right? The ruthless killer, the merciless devil himself, is actually pouting? And toward Evelyn, no less? My God! Is this really the same Mr. Bishop we all know?
“Boss, how about you just hit me and get it out of your system? Come on, Boss…”
Evelyn looked at his pitiful act, hand twitching with the urge to smack him.
“Go ahead, hit me. It’s been so long since you’ve hit me–I almost miss it,” Altair whined.
Evelyn rolled her eyes. With the crowd still watching, she let her hand fall back, sparing the man a little dignity.
Simon was still gaping in disbelief when Evelyn came over and patted his shoulder. “Come on. Let’s go home.”
That snapped him out of it. He broke into a trot to catch up. “Wait for me, Evelyn! Evelyn! Sis!”
Evelyn shot him a sidelong glance. “Oh, I’m your sister now?”
“Heh, you’ve always been my sister. My closest sister,” Simon said quickly, looping his arm through hers to flatter her.
Behind them, Altair pouted, jealous. Even I’ve never held onto the Boss‘ arm like that. Lucky brat.
“Evelyn, you were amazing tonight! I never knew you could fight like that. And you even know Mr. Bishop. What’s your relationship with him?” Simon asked eagerly.
“Nothing much. We’ve just met a few times before.”
“Really?” Simon sounded unconvinced. Altair’s little display just now didn’t seem like the reaction of a man to a casual acquaintance.
“Anyway, it’s done. Let’s go home before Mom starts worrying.”
“No! I’m not going back!” Simon blurted.
“What now?”
“Look at me. If they see me like this, I’ll get scolded–and worse, they’ll just worry.”

Evelyn studied him, then pulled a small tube of ointment from her pocket. “Here, I’ll put some on your face. It’ll cover the bruises. Don’t worry–once we’re home, I’ll handle everything.”
Simon nodded. She dabbed the ointment carefully over his cuts and bruises. Though he was still just a teenager, he was already as tall as she was.
“Thanks, Evelyn. You’re the best. You really are my sister. Not like Alba–she’s always picking fights with me. Her mouth is nasty as hell.” Simon grumbled.
“You two fight a lot?” Evelyn asked.
“Yeah. She fights with everyone in the family, even Mom. Vic and Lottie can’t stand her either, but they still buy her things all the time. I never get anything. She bullies me, curses at me… so when I found out you swapped places with her, I thought…”
You’d be just like her.
“That’s all in the past. From now on, if anyone gives you trouble outside, just tell me. I’ve got you.” Evelyn’s tone was firm.
Simon lit up. “I will. With you around, nobody’s going to dare push me around again!”
“But don’t tell Mom and Dad what happened tonight. No point making them worry.”
“Of course. If they knew how bloody it got, they’d never sleep.”
By the time they got home, night had fully fallen. Penny had finished cooking, and the whole family was waiting for Evelyn and Simon to return.
“They’re back! Evie and Simon are back!” Cosmo called out.
Penny rushed out, relief washing over her when she saw them safe. “You little brat, where did you run off to?” She smacked Simon lightly on the head.
“Mom, Simon was just at a classmate’s place. Don’t worry, he’s fine,” Evelyn cut in smoothly.
Simon lowered his head, guilt written all over his face. “Sorry, Mom. I won’t be so reckless again.”
“Alright then, the food’s cold already. Let’s eat.”
At the table, Simon stuck to Evelyn’s side, tripping over himself to please her. “Evie, have some of this. And this one’s good too–eat more. Try this, Mom made it especially nice.”
Everyone else looked on in shock, having trouble believing that the most hot–tempered son in the family had turned into such a sweet talker.

Penny and Wyatt exchanged a glance, hearts warmed. Ever since Evelyn had returned, the whole family seemed to be changing for the better.
“By the way, Mom, Dad,” Evelyn spoke up suddenly, “I’ve got a place in the city. Why don’t we all move there? The conditions here aren’t great, but that house is big enough for all of us.”
She wanted to give them a better life. That was why she had bought the property.
But Penny’s smile faded. “Evie, was that house from the Cirrus family? We don’t want anything from them.”
“No, it wasn’t. I bought it myself with my own money back then. Not a single penny came from them. You can trust me on that.”
