Chapter 22
A few months later, the operations at the dock complex gradually settled into a steady rhythm, and even began to turn a profit.
Both Braelynn and Alexander were constantly busy, barely having a moment to rest, but seeing the business improve day by day made all their hard work feel worthwhile.
However, Braelynn’s body began to show some unusual signs.
She started to feel tired easily and would occasionally experience sudden bouts of nausea. At first, she thought it was just exhaustion and trouble adjusting to the local environment, so she didn’t pay much attention to it.
It wasn’t until one morning, when a wave of intense nausea hit her, that she sensed something was wrong. She suddenly realized her period was unusually late this month…
A thought flashed through her mind, making her face instantly go pale.
She didn’t dare hesitate and went alone to a local private hospital for a checkup.
The wait for the results felt excruciatingly long. When she finally received the test report showing ‘pregnancy positive,‘ she froze, her mind going completely blank.
A child?
How could this be…
She thought back carefully. The only possible time was before Zachary forcibly took her away… In the chaos, had the emergency medication she took failed to work because she vomited?

A wave of overwhelming panic and helplessness engulfed her. This child was coming at the worst possible time! And it was with Zachary… the very man she had tried so desperately to escape from…
She returned to her apartment in a daze, sitting on the sofa, unable to collect herself for a long time.
When Alexander came by in the evening to go over the accounts with her, he immediately noticed something was wrong. Her face was pale, her eyes evasive, and she looked as if her soul had been drained away.
“What’s wrong? Are you feeling unwell?” He put down the documents and asked with a frown, his tone carrying a subtle hint of concern.
Braelynn looked up at the man in front of her, the one who brought her stability and hope. Her lips moved, but she simply couldn’t bring herself to speak.
How could she tell him? Tell him she was pregnant with another man’s child? And not just any man, but the very one Alexander had seen and even clashed with?
What would Alexander think? Would he still treat her the same way? Would the budding, unspoken feelings between them come to an abrupt
end?
A crushing sense of shame and fear nearly suffocated her.
“It’s… it’s nothing, maybe I’m just a bit tired.” She lowered her head in a panic, avoiding his gaze.
Alexander stared at her for a few seconds, his eyes deep and unreadable. He didn’t press further, only said, “If you’re not feeling well, get some rest. We can look at the accounts tomorrow.”
He put the documents away, and before leaving, glanced back at her. That look seemed to pierce through her facade, seeing the storm raging inside

In the days that followed, Braelynn tried her best to act normal, but the early pregnancy symptoms and her inner turmoil were impossible to fully hide. She became even more withdrawn, often distracted, and her appetite worsened.
Alexander noticed everything. He didn’t ask again, but quietly adjusted her workload, taking on all the tasks that required running around, and made sure she received light, appetizing meals every day.
His silence and thoughtfulness only made Braelynn feel more uncomfortable and guilty.
She knew she should tell him the truth, but she was terrified of seeing disappointment or even disgust in his eyes.
That day, Braelynn finally made up her mind. She couldn’t keep hiding it any longer. No matter the outcome, she had to face it.
She asked Alexander to meet her at the apartment that evening, saying she had something important to discuss.
Alexander arrived on time. He seemed to sense something was coming, his expression even more composed than usual.
Braelynn took a deep breath and handed Alexander the test report, now slightly crumpled from her grip.
Then she lowered her head, not daring to look at his expression, waiting for the final judgment.
The room was terrifyingly quiet; only the sound of their breathing could
be heard.
After a long while, Alexander finally spoke, his voice devoid of emotion: “Is it his?”

Braelynn’s heart clenched painfully, and she nodded with difficulty.
Another long silence followed. Braelynn could almost hear the frantic pounding of her own heart.
She mustered her courage and looked up, only to find that Alexander’s face showed neither the anger nor disgust she had expected. He simply frowned deeply, his gaze fixed on the test report, as if pondering an extremely difficult problem.
“What… do you plan to do?” he finally asked, his voice a little hoarse.
“I… I don’t know…” Braelynn’s voice was choked with tears. “I really don’t know… Alexander, I…”
She was incoherent, the immense pressure nearly breaking her.
Alexander looked at her pale, fragile, tear–streaked face, his frown deepening. Suddenly, he reached out–not to touch her, but to pick up the test report and read it again carefully.
Then, he did something that Braelynn never expected.
He carefully folded the test report and placed it back in her hand.
“Have the baby.” His voice was low and clear, carrying an undeniable strength. “I’ll raise it.”
Braelynn jerked her head up, staring at him in disbelief.
What did he just say?
Alexander met her shocked gaze, his eyes still deep, with not a trace of jest. “The child is innocent. Now that it’s here, it’s a life.”
He paused, his tone softening a little but still resolute: “From now on, is my child.”

There were no grand promises, no moving declarations of love, not even a single word defining their relationship.
Just the simplest, most direct, and also the heaviest three words-“I’ll raise
it.”
In that moment, Braelynn’s tears burst forth. It wasn’t grievance or fear, but an indescribable flood of emotion–mixed with gratitude, guilt, and overwhelming shock–that broke down all her defenses.
She had never imagined that this man would accept her and this sudden, unplanned child in such a way.
