Chapter 6
In the days that followed. Braelynn quietly healed from her injuries in the hospital.
She had a soft and gentle look about her, along with a calm personality, which drew the attention of a kind–hearted woman visiting another patient in the next room.
Noticing that Braelynn was all alone without anyone to care for her, the woman started dropping by to chat. As they talked more often, they began to feel comfortable with each other.
“Braelynn, at your age, you should really think about getting married, right?” the woman said warmly. “I have this nephew who runs his own business. He’s young and ambitious. He’s good–looking and has a great personality too! Want me to set up a meeting?”
Just as Braelynn was about to politely decline because she already had plans to get married abroad, a deep voice suddenly came from behind her.
“She’s not in any rush. No need for her to think about those things just yet.”
Braelynn was stunned. When she turned around, she spotted Zachary walking in with Carolina beside him. Carolina still had gauze wrapped around her hand, looking fragile and kind of pitiful.
Zachary’s eyes landed on her, filled with a mix of emotions that Braelynn just couldn’t figure out.
This was the second time he told her not to rush into finding someone.
“What did he even mean by that?” she thought.
Had he messed up her last life, and now he wanted to mess with her chance at a stable life in this new one?
Even Carolina could tell something was off. She kept glancing back and forth between Zachary and Braclynn with suspicion.
But instead of asking questions, she walked over to Braclynn’s hospital bed with a smile. “Lynn, are you feeling any better? I heard Zach locked you up because of me. I was such a wreck after everything happened that I didn’t get the chance to stop him. Even though we’ve had our issues, we’re sisters after all. I really don’t want to argue about this anymore.”
Carolina set the thermos bag she was holding down on the bedside table. “Zach asked the family chef to make some tonic soup for me. I can’t finish it, so I thought I’d bring some for you.”
Braelynn sneered inside but just gave a slight nod on the outside. “Thanks”
“Alright, you get some rest now. We won’t bother you anymore.” Carolina. linked arms with Zachary, and they left together all cozy–like.
Braelynn never touched the soup. When the nurse came by, she asked for her help to dispose it.
Later that night, after the nurse finished checking up on her, Braelynn glanced at the thermos bag and figured she should return it soon. So she picked it up and headed outside Carolina’s room.
Just as she was about to knock on the door, she heard Carolina’s voice from inside. She sounded like she was crying a bit.
“Zach, you were the one who said you chose me and that you liked me so much! So why do you care so much about my sister’s marriage? You still have feelings for her, don’t you?”
Next came Zachary’s voice, sounding both helpless and a bit comforting.
Chapter
“Carolina, stop overthinking it. You’re the only one I chose.”
“Then why do you keep stopping her from finding someone else?”
“Well, she’s your sister. I just care a little more about her because of you- worried she might rush into picking the wrong guy. If that happens, you’ll be upset later and come bug me again.”
“I don’t believe you! You’re lying to me!” Carolina cried out, pushing back hard and not letting it go.
“Okay, okay, just stop crying,” Zachary said with a mix of helplessness and a hint of irritation in his voice. “I’ll prove to you that I really don’t have any feelings for her at all. Just please stop crying, alright?”
Braelynn felt her heart drop instantly as unease washed over her.
“Prove it? How was he going to do that?”
She couldn’t listen anymore. Feeling panicked, she quickly handed the thermos bag to a passing caregiver and asked them to pass it along before turning around and rushing back to her own ward.
Just as she got to the stairwell, she suddenly heard someone yelling behind her, “Watch out! The cart is sliding down!”
She turned around without thinking, only to see a medicine delivery cart that seemed to have lost control and was rushing straight at her.
Bang!
The huge impact hit her right in the waist. She let out a yelp, lost her balance completely, and tumbled down the stairs.
She crashed hard onto the landing at the corner of the stairs. Her forehead smacked against the cold marble floor, and warm blood started pouring out instantly, blurring her vision.
Just before she blacked out, she saw Zachary hugging Carolina in his arms as he came down from the top of the stairs.
Carolina snuggled in Zachary’s arms, with a hint of pride and satisfaction on her face as she watched Braelynn lying in the pool of blood.
Then she heard Zachary’s deep voice. “You can finally believe me now, right?”
Boom!
Braelynn felt like the whole world was crashing down around her.
So… this was his way of proving it?
Using her blood, her suffering, her life–to show Carolina his sincerity?
Even if he didn’t love her anymore, they had been married for years and shared a bed… Did he really not have even a tiny bit of compassion for her all that time? How could he be so heartless?
The pain and despair hit her like a wave.
She wanted to scream but couldn’t make a sound.
Her vision went dark, and she completely lost consciousness.
