Chapter 4
Just when I was lost in these thoughts, someone walked in through the door.
It was Jackson.
After he showed off his gift, I could tell he was keeping an eye on me the whole time.
I already felt grossed out by him, but what he said next made it even
worse.
“Get rid of the baby. Having a kid outside of marriage will mess up your reputation.”
Hearing that condescending tone from him really made me realize how blind I had been back then.
While everyone else was whispering their judgments about me, Nicholas suddenly showed up.
Everyone thought he came for Victoria.
Victoria looked flustered, but the praise was clearly going to her head. She really thought Nicholas had come just for her.
She strolled over to Nicholas, sweet–talking and fawning all over him.
What a shame, though he couldn’t stand two–faced attention–seekers, and that kind of act left him completely unimpressed.
Brushing off her advances, he turned to Jackson and said challengingly, “It’s not your kid who’s being affected, so why are you in such a rush, Mr.

Danford?”
The guy who had been acting so cocky just moments ago now leaned in slightly with a fake smile. “Mr. Talbott, what brings you here?”
Nicholas wrapped his arms around my waist and pulled me closer. “You don’t need to worry about why I’m here. But I didn’t like what you just said, so please apologize to my wife.”
As soon as he said that, everyone there lost their cool.

I just turned my face away. Nicholas joked around and said, “It’s okay that you don’t apologize. Then for the next movie investment, I’ll just…”
Before he could finish his thought, Jackson quickly blurted out an apology.
My dad tried to ease the tension by saying, “We’re all family here. Let’s not make it awkward.”
Nicholas smiled and shot back, “That’s not how this works, Henry. You may tolerate your wife being pushed aside for a mistress, but I won’t stand for anyone hurting mine.”
As soon as those words were out, things got awkward again.
Victoria wouldn’t back down and tried to defend her mom, but for the first time, she was cut off.

Nicholas just sat there at the Hachett family dinner table, waiting for the food to be served.
I asked, “Aren’t we leaving?”
Nicholas said, “Why leave? We already gave them a gift.” Then he casually picked up a piece of meat for me.
Victoria, sitting next to us, looked dark and stormy while guests whispered among themselves.
“I thought she was pregnant with some guy’s kid? How did she end up with Mr. Talbott?”
“Could it be… that baby in her belly is actually Mr. Talbott’s?”
