Chapter 7
This was the second funniest joke I’ve heard in a while.
I shook his hand off and said firmly, “No.”
Not ready to back down, Matthew blocked my way. “But you clearly said you’d wait for me.”
Looking at his serious expression, I suddenly found it ridiculous. “Didn’t you also say you’d treat me well back then?”
He went quiet but still held onto my hand, trying to explain, and even tried to kiss me forcefully.
When his heated touch brushed my cheek, I realized he’d completely lost it.
I pulled my hand back and slapped him twice. “Can you stop being crazy? I’m already married!”
Matthew stood up, apologized to me, and then walked out of the
restaurant.
As soon as he left through the door, Nicholas came in with a latte.
I held my breath and acted like nothing happened.
But that awkward tension totally gave me away.
“An ex–boyfriend? You sent me away on purpose, didn’t you?”
I just hummed softly in response because I was too scared to look at Nicholas.

I caught a glimpse of his tense face out of the corner of my eye and said without thinking, “You know, just now with him, I…”
Nicholas pulled over to the side. “Ms. Hachett, you really did have awful
taste in men.”
I didn’t know how to respond–though honestly, I would’ve let him say anything if it made him feel better.
When I woke up the next day, Nicholas had to rush off on a last–minute business trip.
I lay in bed with my eyes half–closed and waved at him.
Then I rolled over and fell back asleep again.
By the time I finally woke up properly, it was already noon.
Running into my exes one after another these past few days had been anything but relaxing.
Just when I was lost in all those messy thoughts, the doorbell rang.
When I opened the door and saw Richard’s dark expression, I got so freaked out that I slammed the door shut right away.
I tried to tell myself it was just a trick of my mind.
But then the next message popped up on my phone and pulled me back into a dark place.
“Meet me at Starlight Mansion tonight–or Nicholas dies.”
