Chapter 1
After Serena Bell suffered a relapse from her heart condition, my parents suddenly remembered they had another daughter that is me.
They came to the old estate, bringing my ex–fiancé along, hoping to take me back once more… to save Serena’s life.
But when they arrived, all they found was devastation.
The house had long been abandoned. Overgrown with waist–high weeds, crawling with insects, it looked like a graveyard of forgotten
memories.
And there, crouched by the roadside, was a frail little girl, filthy and thin, picking through the trash.
When they asked her where I was, the girl blinked up at them and shyly hid a rotting apple behind her back.
“Are you looking for my mommy?”
“But… Mommy’s been dead for a long time.”
Mabel’s words made my heart skip a beat.
I looked around at the wild grass swaying in the wind, and I couldn’t help but sigh.
Six years. Just like that, six years had gone by.
Back then, Serena, the fake daughter, stabbed herself at my engagement party with Clarence Evans.
The knife hadn’t even been sharpened. It barely grazed her skin.
But my parents and Clarence still panicked like she was dying.
Everyone abandoned me, the actual bride–to–be, rushing to comfort Serena.
Tears streaming down her face, she pulled out a printed diagnosis and sobbed about her so–called depression. And then, in front of everyone, she began accusing me.
“I know I’m not their real daughter. I know I don’t deserve anything she has.”
“But I just… can’t take it anymore…”
“She drugged my drink, sent a group of thugs to humiliate me, and even recorded the whole thing to blackmail me!”
“Mom, Dad… I was wrong. Just let me die. Maybe then, she’ll stop tormenting me…”
With her trembling voice and teary eyes, she had everyone wrapped around her finger.
No one thought to investigate.
They didn’t hesitate. They pinned it all on me.
My father broke my leg with his own hands.
My mother held a press conference to cut ties with me.
And Clarence, the man I grew up beside, canceled our engagement and threw me back to my so–called “adoptive family.”
I had fallen to my knees that day, clutching his sleeve, begging in tears.
“Clarence, please. Don’t send me back. You grew up with me together–you know how cruel they are. They’ll kill me…”
The man who once swore he’d protect me for life… peeled my fingers off one by one with ice–cold indifference.
Gripping my chin hard, his voice seethed with hatred.
“Did you ever think about how much Serena was hurting when you did that to her?”

“She’s been pampered her whole life. You think she can survive a day in the countryside?”
His eyes flickered with pain for her, and then darkened with fury.
“I already promised to marry you. Why? Why couldn’t you just leave her alone?”
“Eulalie, you brought this on yourself. You deserve everything that’s happened to you.”
To Clarence, Serena was a delicate, beautiful and fragile rose.
And I? I was nothing but roadside weeds. Dirt beneath his feet.
So of course, he chose her. Without hesitation. He left me behind like I meant nothing.
I don’t know what lies they told my adoptive parents. But when I was thrown back into that hellhole, the abuse escalated.
Kicks and punches, starvation, and being forced to stay on my knees for hours. It became my daily life.
One night, my foster father brazenly walked into my room.
I fought back like a wild animal, biting and kicking desperately. He knocked out three of my teeth.
His hands wrapped around my throat as he sneered,
“You still think Clarence is gonna come save you?”
“Wake up. He’s already engaged to Serena. He’s a high–society man now. No one gives a damn about some filthy little rat like you.”
His words shattered every last sliver of hope I had left.
That night, after he fell asleep, I stole his phone and made one final call.
It connected, and I hadn’t even spoken yet when Clarence’s annoyed voice came through.
“I already sent the money, What the hell do you want now?”
“I’m warning you do whatever you want to Eulalie, I don’t care. But don’t you dare lay a hand on Serena.”
“She’s not just the Bell family’s heiress—she’s my fiancée. I won’t let anyone hurt her, not even you.”
That was the moment something inside me truly died.
Abandoned by my birth parents. Beaten and tormented by the people who raised me.
And now, betrayed by the only man I’d ever loved.
I wanted to die. I was ready to give up and end my wretched life.
But just as I stood on the edge of giving up, life played one last cruel joke on me.
I was pregnant.
Three months along. It was Clarence’s child.
The baby, unbelievably strong, had survived every punch, every kick, every starving night.
So I held on.
This little soul who was never supposed to exist became my reason to live.
I ignored the neighbors‘ judgment, endured my foster parents‘ mocking sneers, and gave birth to her.
I named her Mabel.
I had no real family left in this world.

All I could wish for was that she’d grow up safe, happy… complete.
She gave me the strength to survive.
And I started planning. Planning our escape. Planning a new life for just the two of us.
But God never go easy on people like me.
When Mabel turned three, fate delivered yet another cruel blow.
