Chapter 4
My Mabel was the sweetest, most thoughtful child in the world.
She was just like me….
starving for love.
Desperate enough to cling to even the faintest illusion of affection.
Tears poured from my eyes like rain, but no one could see them.
Clarence yanked Mabel by the arm, scowling.
“Where the hell is Eulalie?” he barked. “Is she hiding on purpose? What kind of sick game are you two playing?”
Furious, Mabel sank her teeth into Clarence’s hand.
With a cry of pain, he flung her across the ground like a rag doll.
My parents immediately stepped in to shield Serena, cursing at Mabel like she was some rabid animal.
Serena smirked just for a moment, then reached out to gently tug Clarence’s sleeve, her voice soft and virtuous. “Don’t blame my sister, please. She’s hated me for years- of course she wouldn’t give me her heart.”
“And honestly… I wouldn’t want her to. I know what it’s like to be in pain like this. I wouldn’t wish it on anyone…”
My father immediately clasped Serena’s hands, his eyes burning with urgency.
“Getting to give you her heart is a blessing! It’s the least Eulalie can do after everything we gave her.”
Clarence nodded solemnly beside him. “She’s strong, Serena. She’ll survive with an artificial heart. Don’t worry about her.” Strong?
I let out a cold laugh, bitter and hollow.
It was one thing for the others to be ignorant. But Clarence? He knew exactly what I’d lived through.
He knew that after being sold off to the slums, I had been worked to the bone by my lazy, greedy foster parents.
Hunger was my constant companion. Housework was my only childhood.
Sickness wasn’t allowed. Rest wasn’t allowed.
One time, I had a fever so high I collapsed in the pigsty.
My foster father thought I was slacking. He nearly beat one of my ears deaf.
Clarence heard the commotion. He ran all the way from the other end of the town to carry me to the hospital.
That day, he gently cleaned my wounds. With eyes full of conviction, he said to me:
“Eulalie, just wait. When I grow up, I’ll get you out of here.”
“I’ll make sure you have good food, nice clothes, and no one will ever hit or starve you again.”
Childhood promises… always sound so sincere.
From that day on, Clarence studied like a man possessed. He made it into one of the top universities.
And right around then, my biological parents came to find me.
I was elated. Two miracles in one day.
I didn’t notice the way Serena looked at me, eyes full of hate.

She hated me so much, she was willing to ruin herself just to destroy me. So much that she found someone to end my life.
And yet, the truth wasn’t hard to uncover.
But my parents thought I was crude and unsophisticated. Thought Serena made the better poster child for their reputation.
Clarence saw Serena as the untouchable white moonlight, the perfect red rose.
So they all chose the same thing to pin everything on me.
If not for Serena’s failing heart, I doubt they would have remembered I ever existed.
Snapping out of my thoughts, I looked at them.
The pain in my chest had long since gone numb.
Then Serena shifted her eyes toward Mabel and tilted her head, a cunning glint flashing through.
“This little girl probably knows where Eulalie is,” she said sweetly.
“If we take her, I’m sure Eulalie will come running.‘
Clarence nodded eagerly.
“Take her in for tissue typing,” he ordered coldly.
})
“If Eulalie still refuses to show up, we’ll just put this little brat on the table instead.”
My eyes flew wide open.
I flew at Clarence, my fists pounding through him like smoke.
“She’s a child! She’s only six years old! How could you–how could you do this to her?!”
My hands passed straight through his body, the sun burning my ghostly form.
I screamed, desperate and broken:
“Mabel… Mabel is your daughter!”
“You already killed me! Isn’t that enough? Do you have to kill our child too?!”
No matter how hard I cried, no matter how violently I fought, it was all useless.
I could only watch:
Watch as Mabel was thrown into the back of a car and locked inside.
One day passed. Then another.
Time moved forward. But I couldn’t change a thing.
My parents, Clarence… they ran out of patience.
They ignored Mabel’s terrified sobs and tied her down to the operating table.
But just as they were about to begin, Clarence paused. He looked down at Mabel’s tear–streaked face,
There was something so achingly familiar about her expression.
So familiar, in fact, that he found himself blurting out:
“Who’s your father?”
“What kind of idiot would sleep with a man who lets his kid scavenge for garbage?”

“Where the hell is Eulalie? Still not showing up after all this?”
Mabel opened her mouth, about to answer. But then my mother burst into the room, weeping.
“Still no word from Eulalie? Serena’s condition is deteriorating! If we don’t do the surgery now, it’ll be too late!”
“That damned girl must be stalling on purpose–she wants to kill my daughter!”
Clarence’s face turned grim. Any trace of hesitation vanished.
He shoved Mabel toward the surgical suite.
The moment the doors slammed shut, I collapsed to the ground, utterly destroyed.
And just when I thought all hope was lost, a doctor came rushing down the hall, shouting.
“Stop the surgery! Clarence, do you even know who that little girl on the operating table is?!”
