Chapter 10
“I-” Mia’s eyes were darting all over the place.
“That doesn’t prove anything. For all I know, you could’ve injected the patient with penicillin after I left to set me up. David and Nick like me better. So, you probably did it because you were jealous of me!” she barked.
At this point, she wasn’t even making any sense anymore. Based on how well I knew her, I could tell that she was hiding something.
Being charged with premeditated murder was a lot more complicated than being accused of medical negligence. If she were found guilty of murder, she could be given a death sentence.
Since the evidence that I’d submitted completely redefined the case, the higher–ups in the police department took the investigation very seriously. A special unit was established to conduct a new investigation.
Under investigation for dereliction of duty, David and Nick were suspended from their respective jobs and placed under house arrest while they awaited disciplinary action.
All of us were having a difficult time.
Everyone I ran into at home glared at me with contempt. I spent most of my time in my bedroom, but I couldn’t fully avoid running into David as we lived under the same roof.
“You just had to blow everything out of proportion. Are you happy now that you’ve gotten me suspended? You’re just trying to ruin the entire family!” he barked at me when he saw me.
“If you don’t tell the authorities that this is all your fault, I’m going to disown you,” he threatened.
Nick, on the other hand, sent me a cold message to terminate our friendship.
“Let’s not contact each other again, Natalie. I’m just going to act like I don’t know you. You’ve really let me down.
“Let’s pretend that nothing has ever happened between us. Please don’t call or text me anymore,” his text read.
If I wasn’t as strong or resilient as I was, their actions would’ve broken me completely.
While they posed as victims, they were trying to pin the blame on me and label me the perpetrator. They shamelessly lied through their teeth and claimed that they had done nothing wrong. They were also twisting the truth into a narrative that benefited them.
As soon as I strayed from their instructions and failed to do as they asked, they acted shocked and tried to harm my reputation
instead.
I didn’t want to prove myself to anyone–and I didn’t need to either. Otherwise, I’d just be stepping into another one of their traps.
I blocked their numbers before they could do the same to me. Then, I moved out of the house and patiently waited for them to

face the punishment they deserved.
As the investigation progressed, Mia became the prime suspect. She was placed under house arrest while she awaited the next
step of the investigation.
However, I wasn’t able to let my guard down just yet. Unless Mia admitted to her crimes, my name would never be cleared. If that were the case, she would definitely look for a convenient opportunity to retaliate against me.
In order to search for more evidence, I returned to the hospital.
I’d returned to where it all began. I’d decided to look into the penicillin that Max was allergic to.
Mia was well aware that Max was allergic to penicillin. Despite this, she still gave him the drug, allegedly by accident.
Was this all just a huge coincidence?
If she didn’t make a mistake while she was administering the IV, there was only one possible explanation.
She gave him the penicillin on purpose.
But what motive did she have? Why would she harm a seven–year–old boy?
Just as I was deep in thought, I heard a commotion coming from the entrance of the hospital.
