Chapter 14
Max’s father’s hands were trembling. He looked shocked.
“What did you just say?” he asked in disbelief. “I’ll kill you if I find out that you’re lying to me.”
David hastily interrupted me and barked, “Stop spouting nonsense, Natalie!”
I ignored him and continued, “Someone sent me this video as proof. Take a look at it yourself.”
I enlarged the video and pressed play.
The video was taken in a dimly lit stairwell. In the video, Mia was seen suspiciously making a phone call.
She looked very anxious. She couldn’t stop stomping her feet. In a panicked voice, she cried, “What do I do? I wanted to teach that
brat a lesson, so I gave him some penicillin. I didn’t know he was deathly allergic. I didn’t think he was going to die from it!”
Since it was very quiet at night, I was able to recognize my brother’s voice immediately. On the other end of the phone, he was
patiently giving Mia instructions on what to do.
“When 5:00 am rolls around, don’t give Max the fluids. Pretend like you have a stomach ache and ask Natalie to do it for you
while you head home.
“Once everyone discovers that Max is dead, blame Natalie for it. Don’t worry. I’ll make sure nothing happens to you, no matter
what.”
Even though I no longer cared about David, I still felt hurt when I heard him instruct Mia to pin the blame on me.
After Mia hung up, she called Nick.
“What if Max’s family requests an autopsy? They’ll find out that he died around the time I administered the IV,” Mia wailed.
Nick replied firmly, “I’ll alter the time of death and claim that he died after 5:00 am. Then, no one would suspect a thing.”
The video was sent to me by the anonymous person who messaged me earlier. The man told me that his son was currently
receiving treatment in the hospital. In order to save money, he chose to sleep in the stairwell at night.
He happened to overhear Mia’s phone call and filmed it out of curiosity.
I felt incredibly grateful that he sent me the video. However, I was genuinely surprised that he sounded more earnest than I was.
“I should be thanking you instead, Ms. Hoffman. When I couldn’t afford my son’s hospital bills, I was at my wits‘ end. That nurse, Mia, even made fun of us because we were from the countryside. She told us we shouldn’t be at the hospital if we couldn’t afford
- it.
“You, on the other hand, offered to pay for us instead. You even managed to get everyone to donate some money to us so we could afford the rest of our bills. I don’t know what we would’ve done without you.

“Thankfully, my son has made a full recovery and is no longer hospitalized. I’m sorry I didn’t contact you sooner. I only found out about this incident when I saw Mia defaming you online.
“It’s a strange coincidence. If she hadn’t mocked me the other day, I wouldn’t have remembered her. I wouldn’t have taken the
video either.”
“What goes around comes around,” I thought to myself.
As it turned out, my small act of kindness ended up helping me in the long run. On the contrary, Mia’s evil deeds single–handedly caused her own downfall.
